Family Visitor Visa – UK
A Family Visitor Visa falls under the Standard Visitor Visa category and allows individuals to visit family members in the UK for a short-term stay. This visa is typically granted for up to 6 months and is intended strictly for visits – not for long-term residence or work.
Who Can Apply?
- You can apply for a Family Visitor Visa if you wish to visit a close family member in the UK, such as:
- Spouse or partner
- Parents or step-parents
- Children or stepchildren
- Siblings or step-siblings
- Grandparents or grandchildren
- Aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews (in certain cases, especially if they’re the only family you have in the UK)
Key Requirements
- To be eligible, applicants must:
- Genuinely intend to visit the UK for a short period and leave at the end of their visit.
- Not live in the UK through repeated visits or make the UK their main home.
- Visit only for permitted family-related purposes, such as attending family events, holidays, or simply spending time with relatives.
- You are not eligible to undertake employment or to access public funds while in the United Kingdom.
- Have sufficient funds to cover the trip, including travel, accommodation and day-to-day expenses. Not eligible to engage in work or to claim public funds.
- Demonstrate strong ties to their home country (e.g, job, property, dependents) to prove their intention to return.
- Provide evidence of their relationship with the UK-based family member.
Supporting Documents
You will need to provide the following documents as part of your application:
Financial Evidence
- A valid passport or travel document
- Financial documents (e.g, bank statements, salary slips)
- Evidence of your relationship with the UK family member (e.g, birth or marriage certificates)
- A detailed itinerary or letter of invitation from your UK-based family member
- Proof of accommodation arrangements
- Evidence of ties to your home country (e.g, employment letter, property ownership, school enrolment for children)
- Your UK-based relative may also provide a support letter, confirming they are hosting you and detailing the purpose and duration of your visit.
Important Notes
- A Family Visitor Visa does not allow the applicant to work or claim benefits.
- It cannot be used to access the NHS for free medical care, unless in emergencies – private insurance is strongly recommended.
- Overstaying this visa may impact future UK visa applications.
