Who Can Apply for Naturalisation?
- You may qualify to become a British citizen through naturalisation if you meet all of these requirements:
1. Residency Status
- You must have Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) or EU Settled Status
2. Residence Requirements
- Lived in the UK for at least 5 years (or 3 years if married to a British citizen)
- Not spent more than 450 days outside the UK during the 5-year period
- Not been absent for more than 90 days in the final 12 months before applying
3. Good Character Requirement
- No serious criminal record (including unspent convictions)
- No history of immigration offences
- Paid all UK taxes
- Not engaged in extremism or terrorism-related activities
4. Language & Knowledge of Life
- Passed B1 level English test (or have a degree taught in English)
- Passed the Life in the UK Test
5. Future Intentions
- Intend to make the UK your permanent home
- Not planning to live abroad long-term
Application Process Step-by-Step
Step 1: Check Eligibility
- Verify you meet all requirements using the GOV.UK checker
- Ensure you've held ILR/Settled Status for long enough
Step 2: Prepare Documents
- You'll need:
- Current passport & BRP (Biometric Residence Permit)
- Proof of English language ability
- Life in the UK Test pass certificate
- Evidence of residence (P60s, utility bills, council tax statements)
- Criminal record certificate (if required)
Step 3: Submit Application
- Complete Form AN online
- Attend biometrics appointment
Step 4: Attend Citizenship Ceremony
- If approved, you must:
- Swear an oath of allegiance
- Pledge loyalty to the UK
- Receive your certificate of naturalisation
