What is the EU Settlement Scheme Family Permit?
The EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS) Family Permit allows non-EU family members of qualifying EU/EEA/Swiss citizens to enter and live in the UK for up to 6 months. It serves as a bridge to applying for pre-settled or settled status under the EUSS.
Who Can Apply?
Eligible Family Members
You may qualify if you're the:
- Spouse/civil partner/unmarried partner (2+ years cohabitation)
- Child/dependent parent/grandparent
- Dependent relative (if cared for by EU citizen before 2021)
Key Requirements
Your EU/EEA/Swiss family member must either:
- Have pre-settled/settled status in the UK
- Have been living in the UK by Dec 31, 2020 (with "reasonable grounds" for late application)
Application Process
Step 1: Prepare Documents
- Valid passport
- Proof of relationship (marriage/birth certificates)
- EU sponsor's status (share code from their EUSS status)
- Evidence of dependency (if applicable)
Step 2: Apply Online
- Complete the free application on GOV.UK
- Submit biometrics at a visa application center
Step 3: Decision
- Processing time: Usually 4-6 weeks
- Valid for 6 months (single or multiple entry)
After Arrival in the UK
- Apply for pre-settled status within 3 months
- Switch to settled status after 5 years' residence
Common Refusal Reasons
