Refugee Status: Granted to individuals who meet the definition of a refugee under Article 1 of the 1951 Refugee Convention. This status is awarded to those who face persecution due to race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion.

Humanitarian Protection: This status is for individuals who do not meet the refugee criteria but face a serious risk of harm if returned to their country. It includes those at risk from general violence or harmful conditions not tied to specific reasons like race or religion.

For applications made after 28 June 2022, humanitarian protection is granted temporarily for 2.5 years. Settlement is possible after ten years, and family reunion is only allowed if there are insurmountable obstacles to family life continuing elsewhere.
Under Paragraph 339(c) of the Immigration Rules, an applicant must show a real risk of serious harm if returned to their country of origin. Unlike refugee status, there is no need to show that the risk is related to specific reasons; general conditions of harm or violence are sufficient.
