UK Medical Visa
The UK Medical Visa (officially granted under the Standard Visitor Visa category) allows individuals to travel to the UK for private medical treatment, consultations, or organ donor purposes. This visa is not for accessing NHS treatment unless pre-paid or covered under a reciprocal healthcare agreement.
Eligibility Criteria
- To qualify, applicants must:
- Require private medical treatment (not available or delayed in home country).
- Have a formal medical referral or appointment confirmation from a UK-registered doctor/hospital.
- Have a genuine relationship with their partner (evidence may be required).
- Prove sufficient funds to cover treatment, travel, and living costs without public funds.
- Intend to leave the UK post-treatment (unless long-term care is medically justified).
- Not pose a public health risk (e.g., infectious diseases requiring isolation).
Required Documents
Applicants must submit:
1. Medical Evidence
- A detailed letter from a UK-based doctor/hospital confirming:
- Diagnosis & treatment plan.
- Estimated costs and duration.
- Why treatment is needed in the UK.
- Supporting medical reports from home country doctors.
2. Financial Proof
- Bank statements (last 6 months) showing ability to pay for treatment.
- If sponsored: Letter from sponsor + their financial documents.
- Health insurance covering treatment (if applicable).
3. Accommodation & Travel Plans
- Hotel bookings or a host’s invitation letter (if staying with family/friends).
- Return flight tickets (optional but recommended).
4. Additional Documents
- Ties to home country (job letter, property deeds, family dependents).
- Previous visa refusals (if any) with explanations.
5. Visa Duration & Extensions
- Standard stay: Up to 6 months (or 11 months for long-term treatments).
- Extensions possible if medically justified (apply before expiry).
Permitted & Restricted Activities
Allowed:
- Private consultations, surgery, or specialist treatments.
- Organ donation (with prior approval).
- Accompanying family members (must apply separately).
Not Allowed:
- Free NHS treatment (unless pre-paid or under reciprocal agreement).
- Work or study (unless related to medical recovery).
- Overstaying beyond treatment period.
